Assisi occupies a stunning site on a steep hillside reached by a 1.5 kilometre drive. The house was architecturally designed and has spectacular views over the Wairarapa landscape with mountains beyond. The garden is less than ten years old and the terrain and climatic conditions are a challenge.

Assisi is planted out with numerous different species. Tree Lucerne being used as a pioneer plant to good effect while native grasses and flax are a key component . Mass plantings of Cabbage Trees, Rienga Rienga, Dianella, Red Flowing Manuka and Wild Flowers have proved effective as have Portuguese Laurels.

There is a grove of Olives also used as ornamemtals bordered by a limestone wall, all rocks coming from the property and an orchard of several different nuts and fruits including 50 Pistacia.

A large pond excavated by the owner in the early days occupies the centre of the garden -- Willow, Flax and Larches are a theme there. Steps lead down a pathway to a jetty and the owners sculptures feature throughout the garden.

Every year an extensive planting programme is undertaken with this years planting being Redwoods, Chatham Island Forget Me Nots, Hydrangeas, Red Hot Pokers and Cotoneaster.
